One dead as van rolls into water-filled ditch
Driver killed in crash near Vincent

By BILL SHEA, Messenger staff writer

The driver of a minivan was killed when it rolled near Vincent Thursday.

VINCENT - A woman was killed and two children were hurt when a minivan went off a rural Webster County road and landed on its roof in about 4 feet of water Thursday evening, state troopers reported. The names of the people were not released at press time Thursday night because authorities were in the process of notifying their relatives, according to Lt. Kelly Hindman of the Iowa State Patrol. However, a minimal crash report was later posted on the Iowa State Patrol's website, listing the victims as Alejandra Ortiz, 34; Joel Mendoza, 9; and Jack Mendoza, 5; all of Eagle Grove.

The crash happened at about 7:15 p.m. Hindman said a 1996 Mercury Villager minivan was heading east on 120th Street near Vasse Avenue when it went out of control. The van crossed the center line of 120th Street, went off the north side of the road, rolled over and ended up on its roof in the water, he said. Fields on both sides of the road in that area are flooded with water from recent storms. Hindman said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

He said the two children were taken to Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge with "non life-threatening injuries." State troopers were still investigating the crash late Thursday night. Webster County sheriff's deputies, Vincent firefighters and paramedics from Trinity Regional Medical Center were on the scene with troopers.
