Lillian "Lou" Miller
September 14, 1926 -- April 4, 2008Lou Miller was born in Alexander, Iowa on September 14, 1926 to Louis and Maude Peters, the youngest of 3 girls. Lou was preceded in death by her mother in 1961, her father in 1964, and her oldest sister Dorothy in 1988. Her remaining sister, Arlene Cutler, currently resides in Corvallis, Oregon. The Peters family moved to Portland, Oregon at the beginning of World War II where Louis, Dorothy and Lou worked in the shipyards. They worked outfitting the ships from the ships stores. After the war, Lou and her parents moved to Fresno, California. Lou went to the work for Fresno County in the Assessors Office as a clerk typist while attending Business College. The operations of the State Franchise Office improved when Lou went to work there in 1963. And fortuitously, that is where she met Thomas A Miller in 1970 when he came asking for assistance on a non-resident tax return. Tom and Lou married in 1973 in Lincoln City, Oregon and lived in Fresno until Toms job with Anderson Clayton took them to Gilbert, Arizona in 1974. They returned to California and settled in Madera in 1977. Lou and Tom traveled extensively with Toms business responsibilities, as well as taking pleasure trips to Hawaii, Alaska, the Panama Canal and Europe. In addition to supporting Tom in all his many responsibilities, Lou stayed busy with volunteer work with the Madera Community Hospital Foundation. She served as President for 2 of the 10 years of her association with the Foundation. She and Tom enjoyed their cabin at Fish Camp which provided rest, relaxation and a retreat from the heat of the valley. Lou also kept the books and did all the banking for the Fish Camp Mutual Water Company.
Lou treasured the time she spent with her many friends and family members, including her cousin, Dr. Gerald Peters and his wife Ann. One of the best friends she had in addition to Tom, was a special girl named Cindy. Cindy spent many hours at Lous side while she worked crossword puzzles. . . . . Cindy was their black Lab. In addition to Cindy and Tom, Lou had a great love for their daughters, Cheryl and Michele, her granddaughters, Lanae, Cherisa, Caryn and Celina, and her 11 great-grandchildren. She enjoyed having the grandchildren come down each summer, two at a time, to go shopping and visit the mountains. The granddaughters knew to race to read the comics in the newspaper before Gramma Lou grabbed the crossword puzzle. The great grandchildren loved their Miller Gramma and knew she was a soft touch for whatever they wanted to do.
Lou passed away peacefully, although very unexpectedly, in her sleep on Friday morning, April 4, 2008. She will be greatly missed her family and a host of friends, who were near and dear to her heart. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 8, 2008 from 4 to 8 PM in Jay Chapel in Madera. A funeral service will be Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 10 AM in Jay Chapel. Interment will be private in Arbor Vitae Cemetery in Madera.
