July 22, 1999Eunice Marie Johanna Kjorlaug, 86, of Decorah, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at the Aase Haugen Home. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 21, at 2 p.m., at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Joan Mau officiating. Michael Elsbemd was the organist. The congregation sang "Beautiful Savior," "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" and "On Our Way Rejoicing."
Casket bearers were Bruce Battles, Warren Berg, John R. Christiansen, Kenton Finanger, George McArthur and David Roslien. Burial was at the Lutheran Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.Eunice Marie Johanna Kjorlaug was born Nov. 18, 1912, in Warren, Minn., the daughter of the Rev. Peter F. and Elizabeth (Linnevold) Kjorlaug. Later, her father served two churches in Rice Lake, Wis., and Eunice started school there. When her father was called to another parish, Eunice changed schools. She attended school in Thor and Eagle Grove, later graduating from Waukon High School. At that time, Waukon had a junior college and Eunice attended it for two years, finishing her college education at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Further education was obtained at the University of Iowa. Eunice taught in public schools in Iowa, Stephens College in Missouri, and at different times at Luther College. Later, she was active in teaching English to families from Vietnam under the auspices of a program at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She also served as a guide at Vesterheim. She was a regular visitor at the Aase Haugen Home and a visitor to the elderly in private homes in Decorah. Before her hearing and eyesight failed, she traveled to the Southwest and Mexico, visiting relatives and natives, and utilizing her ability with the Spanish language, which she taught in public schools. Survivors include a few cousins and a host of friends.
