ALDEN, Iowa — Paul W. Cary, 87, of Alden, died on Friday, July 7, 2006, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, July 12, at the Lee Center United Methodist Church, rural Iowa Falls, with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Lee Center Church. The Surls Funeral Home in Alden is in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Woodrow Cary, was born on July 22, 1918 in Alden, the son of Earl and Elizabeth (Keller) Cary. He graduated from the Alden High School in 1936 and had been a faithful member of the Lee Center Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Popejoy Lions Club. He had been a farmer all of his life and retired at the age of 85 with a large farm machinery sale in August of 2003. Farming was his love and he had achieved many awards for his corn and soybean yields. His “shop” was also an important part of his life. This is where he restored all of those old rusty tractors. His neighbors also enjoyed his shop, they also had things to fix, paint and repair. One of his favorites was his dad’s first tractor, a 1936 Hart-Par. This one was the jewel of them all. He also made “auger wagon” trailers. You name it and he had made it. His hands were never idle. He also enjoyed his 150-year-old lathe. (That was a gift from his brother, Lyle.) His shop was sort of like “Paul’s Recreation Center” - there were always neighbors and friends who would congregate there, maybe to pay a visit or maybe they needed something repaired. Paul was also a lover of pets - he could often be seen in the tan pickup, going here and there with his Siberian husky peeking out the windows and enjoying the ride.

Paul is survived by his sister, Mary Silke of Alden; two nephews, Lyle V. Cary Jr. of Decorah and William E. Cary of Cedar Rapids; two nieces, Dr. Candy Cary of Madison, Wisconsin and Mary E. Cary of La Crosse, Wisconsin; five grandnephews and grandnieces, Paul B. Cary of Chicago, Illinois, Michael Cary of Decorah, Dustin Cary of Decorah, Ann Cary of Portland, Oregon and Kristine Archer of Tomball, Texas; and one great-grandniece, Trinity M. Archer of Tomball. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lyle V. Cary, Sr. and Dale Cary; and a sister, Bernadine Sampson.
