BELMOND, IA — Lola E. Schulte, 78, of Belmond and Alexander died Tuesday (May 18, 2010) at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 21, at First Reformed Church in Alexander with Pastor Philip Arnold officiating. A private family burial will take place in the Alexander Cemetery. There will be no viewing or visitation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane S. in Belmond.

Lola Ellen Markwardt was born on a farm in Franklin County, Dec. 22, 1931, to Tom Oscar Markwardt and Margaret Ellen Nicholson. She attended country school in Richland Township and high school in Alexander, graduating in 1949. She married Calvin Schulte on Jan. 15, 1950; a marriage that lasted 60-plus years. Calvin and Lola farmed in rural Alexander. The couple was blessed with three children. Lola loved her family and cherished her role as wife and mother. She took pleasure in gardening, cooking and traveling. Upon retirement, the couple spent their summers on the farm and winters in Mesa, Ariz. Fishing trips to Canada, as a couple or with good friends, were favorite times. She was a member of First Reformed Church in Alexander and a member of the Reformed Church Women. Lola's walk of faith was exemplified in her life. In 2009, she and Calvin moved to Belle Haven Apartments in Belmond. Lola was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ina (Laurell) Burger; two infant brothers; a daughter, Barbara Lynn Peil, in 1996; and a sister-in-law, Arlene (Merlin) Bier. She is survived by her husband, Calvin; a son, Corwin and Carla, of Alexander; a daughter, Nancy (Tim) Green, of Columbus, Ohio. Five grandsons, Adam, Sean, and Ian Green of Columbus, Ohio, Rob (Cindy) Peil of Coulter, and Jeff Peil of Johnston. Two great-grandsons, Evan and Camden Peil of Coulter; a son-in-law, Loran Peil of Alexander; a sister-in-law, Evelyn (Foster) Barkema of Olathe, Kan., and numerous nieces and nephews.
