Leona Mattie Blau, 89, of Belmond, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Reformed Church in Alexander, with the Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Interment will be held in Alexander Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Leona Mattie (Foss) Blau, the daughter of Henry and Bessie (Schmidt) Foss, was born April 21, 1910, at Goodell. She attended country school in rural Goodell and was united in marriage to Dick Blau on Sept. 19, 1929, at Hampton. They began farming together on a farm where they resided all of their married life. Leona was a typical farmer's wife, sharing in all the chores, mother to seven children. She kept her home immaculately clean, was a very good cook and loved to crochet and quilt. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very important to her and she enjoyed spending time with them. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Alexander, the RCW and was a member of the Cemetery Society. Leona died on Monday (March 20, 2000) at her farm home in rural Alexander.

She leaves to cherish her memory, sons, Gene Blau, of Mason City, Duane Blau and his wife, Nancy, of South Bend, Ind., Marlin Blau and his wife, Linda, of Alexander, Gary Blau, of Alexander, and Richard Blau and his wife, Susan, of Alexander; daughters, Madonna Brcka, of Palm Desert, Calif. and Sandra Dorenkamp and her husband, Kenneth, of Alexander; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lavonne Hain and her husband, Claude, of Ventura. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick; two brothers; and one sister. Tenold Funeral Home.
