February 2, 2005BRITT, IA — Thomas Gilmore "Tom" Hughes, 71, of Britt passed away Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Funeral Mass for Tom Hughes will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt with Father Michael Schueller officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. West in Britt, with a 7 p.m. rosary service under the direction of the Catholic Workmen.
Tom, the son of Leo and Winifred (Gilmore) Hughes, was born on May 29, 1933, in Britt. As a young boy he shined shoes on Main Street, delivered papers and telegrams and worked at the local grocery store. Tom attended and graduated from Britt High School in 1952. Tom was united in marriage to Rose R. Wellik on Nov. 8, 1954, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. During his lifetime Tom was employed by the Britt Farmers Coop, Kabrick Distributing in Britt and J&W Distributing in Mason City. In 1984, Tom and Rose established RTC's Lounge in Algona. Upon retiring in 1994, Tom had various part-time jobs including driving cars for Pritchard Auto, janitor at the Kanawha School and seasonal work at AgMax Partners. Tom was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt and a member of Catholic Workmen Branch 51. Tom's pride and joy were his four grandchildren. Tom enjoyed driving his car and solving the world's problems on the corner with the gang.
Tom is survived by his five children: Becky of Marion, Conn., Mary Jo of Britt, Linda of Britt, Todd and wife Jennifer of Thompson, and Jeffrey of Britt; three granddaughters: Bailey, Lucy and Ella; and one grandson Thomas; four sisters: Mary Leverenz of Santa Clara, Calif., Coleen Davison and husband Joe of Mary Ester, Fla., Michele Hostman and husband Robert of Britt, and Kathryn Smith and husband Paul of Britt; uncle Forrest Gilmore and wife Mildred of Trenton, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Leo and Winnie; his beloved wife of 48 years Rose in 2002; and a brother-in-law, Clifton Leverenz. Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel.
