Stuart J. Olson, 94, of Harbor Springs, Michigan died Feb. 11, 2003, at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey. Stuart was born Oct. 11, 1908, in Thor, Iowa, the son of Olous and Eva (Bartholomew) Olson. He attended Thor schools and graduated from Eagle Grove High School. He graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, with a bachelor's degree in education and received his master's of education degree from the University of Wisconsin. On July 22, 1933, he married Gladys Opheim at Thor, Iowa. They made their home at Wauwatosa, Wis., where he taught math and later became the high school guidance counselor. He retired in 1973 and the couple moved to Harbor Springs, where they have been since. Stuart was a member of the Kiwanis of Harbor Springs and served as secretary for many years. He enjoyed the International Fool Your Buddy Koffee Klub of Harbor Springs, was an active member of the United Methodist Church and the Little Traverse Conservancy. He enjoyed golf and was a member of Harbor Point Golf Club. He also enjoyed playing cribbage at the American Legion. He was a stockholder of the Green Bay Packers and attended the "ice bowl" in 1967. He was an avid reader and was interested in current world issues.

Stuart is survived by his wife; daughter, Mary Fischer and husband, John, of Harbor Springs; son, John and wife, Linda, of Sumpter, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Kristin and Lesley Fischer of Harbor Springs, Debra (Gregg) Garver of Harbor Springs, Tracy (Chris) Meono of Ann Arbor, Anne (Bret) McCollum of Carmel, Ind., Sarah (Jeff) Smith of Franklin, Ind., Stuart Richard Olson of Butler, Pa.; and 10 great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Church of Harbor Springs or Little Traverse Conservancy. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. The family was served by Schiller Funeral Home of Harbor Springs.
