Roger Lindsay Cox, age 79, Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Delaware, died on May 3, 2010 at Cokesbury Village Health Center. Born in Manson, Iowa on March 23, 1931, he received his bachelor's degree from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, his master's from U.C.L.A., and his Ph.D. from Columbia. In 1951 he married Joan Rae Damerow of Dows, Iowa.

In a forty-year academic career, he taught at Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine; at DePauw University, in Greencastle, Indiana; and at the University of Delaware, where he served one term as associate chairperson of the English department. In 1993 he was a visiting professor at the Jean-Moulin University in Lyon, France; and at various times he was a Fulbright Scholar in Italy, a Lydia Roberts Fellow at Columbia University, a Study Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies, and a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh. He was also active as a member of the International Dostoevsky Society. Professor Cox was the author of books on Shakespeare and Dostoevsky, and of numerous articles in scholarly and critical journals. He served for two years in the Army Transportation Corps during the Korean conflict. For many years he was a member of the Immanuel Episcopal Church in New Castle, where he served two terms on the vestry. He was an ardent collector of recorded music, especially opera, piano music, and requiems. Three years after his retirement in 1996, he and his wife moved to Cokesbury Village in Hockessin.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years. He is survived by his four children, Julie Atkinson and husband, George, of Middletown, Delaware; Laurie Herald and husband, Mike, of Bear, Delaware; Stephen Cox and wife Chris, of Sag Harbor, New York; and Allan Cox of Wilmington, Delaware; and seven granddaughters.

Interment of cremains will be held at 11 am on Saturday, June 26, 2010, at Old Drawyers Cemetery, Odessa, DE, followed by a celebration picnic at Greensprings Farm, 1201 Shallcross Lake Road, Middletown, DE. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, June 27, 2010, at Cokesbury Village Auditorium, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE, followed by a reception in the atrium.
