BRITT, IA - Opal Ross, 85, of Britt passed away Friday (Aug. 15, 2003) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. Funeral services for Opal Ross will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Britt with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer officiating. Burial will take place at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha. Friends may greet the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ewing Funeral Home, 178 Center St. W. in Britt and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
Opal, the daughter of Charlie and Clara Heckerson Hall, was born April 18, 1918, at the family home in Kanawha. She grew up in the Kanawha area, where she attended country school and graduated from Kanawha High School in 1935. Following high school, she attended Chillicothe Business College. Opal then returned to Kanawha, where she was employed by the Farmers State Bank. On June 28, 1939, Opal was united in marriage with B. Donald Ross at the Kanawha Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Corwith until 1944 when they moved to Britt, where they raised their family. Opal was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Britt, where she taught Sunday school and was active in the women's groups. She was also a member of the Notebena Women's Club in Britt. Opal loved gardening, especially her flowers. She enjoyed embroidery and sewing, and loved shopping. Opal is remembered for her kindness, compassion and generosity toward others, especially her family.
Opal is survived by her husband, B. Donald; daughter, Vicki Peterson and her husband, Stuart, of Woodbury, Minn.; two sons, Vincent Ross and his wife, Armon, Eden Prairie, Minn., and Vaughan R. Ross of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Allyson and Timothy Czaja, Angela and Daniel Olson, Nathan Ross, Scott and Judy Stolley-Peterson, Valerie and Steve Lambert, and Vachelle and Cameron Johnston; five great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Clara, Eleanor, Hailey and Josie, and special cousin, Ed Engstrom and his wife, Bessie, of Kanawha. She was preceded in death by her parents. Ewing Funeral Home, Britt.
