THOMPSON, IA - Darrell K. Morgan, age 73 of Thompson, died Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City. Funeral service will be at 1:30 PM on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with Pastor Mark Decker officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson. Visitation will be held an hour prior to service at the church.
Darrell Keith Morgan was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa on March 20, 1936, the son of Marion and Laveta (Elwood) Morgan. He was baptized at the Methodist Church in Renwick, Iowa. He moved with his family to Thompson in 1948. He attended Eden #5 county school and graduated from Thompson High School in 1953. Darrell married Harriet Judd on September 18, 1954 at Bethany Lutheran Church. They became the parents of one daughter, Jacquelyn Jo, born in 1958. Darrell and Harriet celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2004. Darrell worked for the Winnebago County ASCS, farmed and was a rural mail carrier. He received a plaque for 42 years of government service when he retired in 2001. He took a great deal of pride in his community and was delighted to serve as Mayor of Thompson from 1998 to 2005. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and for many years was very active in the Lions Club.
After Harriet passed away in February of 2008, Darrell was cared for by his daughter Jaci and son-in-law Dan. In January of 2009, failing health forced him to enter the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City, where he passed away on December 8, 2009. Left to cherish his memory is his daughter and son-in-law, Jaci and Dan Dean; sister Roselyn (Lyle) Matson; brother Merlin Morgan; 17 nieces and nephews and sister-in-law Marge (Lowell) Solberg and a brother-in-law, Bob Erickson. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, his only grandson Matthew Pattinson, son-in-law Bill Pattinson, in-laws C.E. and Theo Judd and a sister-in-law Judy Erickson.
