Sioux City Journal, Sioux City, IowaMISSOURI VALLEY, Iowa -- Charles H. Earleywine, 55, of Missouri Valley died April 24, 2010, at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Missouri Valley High School. The Rev. Mike Berner and the Rev. Barbara Todd will be officiating. Evonne Muff will be the vocalist and Lyle Waterhouse the pianist. Interment will be in Little Sioux Cemetery, Little Sioux, Iowa. The family invites everyone to a luncheon at Nealy Hall in Little Sioux following the interment. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 6 p.m., at the Missouri Valley High School. Arrangements are under the direction of Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home in Missouri Valley.
Chuck was born to Charles D. and Anne M. (McColley) Earleywine, during a blizzard in Little Sioux, on March 20, 1955. Chuck attended elementary school in Little Sioux and junior and senior high at West Harrison in Mondamin, Iowa. Chuck was a state wrestling contender throughout high school, winning a fifth place medal his senior year. Following high school, he attended college at Iowa Central in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He transferred from Iowa Central to Dana College in Blair, Neb., in 1974 and attended college there for three years. He left college to go to work, but returned to Dana where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in education in 1986. Chuck also played football and wrestled for Dana while attending college there. After graduating from Dana, he became an assistant football coach at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Neb., where he was also an RA. He then applied to be a graduate assistant at North Dakota State University and moved to Fargo, N.D., to work with Bucky Mohn, the head wrestling coach for NDSU. From there, Chuck moved to Missouri Valley and became the head wrestling coach and assistant football coach for Missouri Valley High School. He began teaching world history and physical education in 1991, and remained at MVHS until he retired in January 2010.
In 1998, Chuck began dating a former high school sweetheart, Deborah Day, and on Nov. 4, 2000, they were united in marriage at the First Presbyterian Church in Missouri Valley. During his 19 years at MVHS, Chuck took many wrestlers to the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament and in 2005 he coached MVHS' first two-time state champion, Dalton Jensen, and runner-up, Gavin Nelson. Chuck was a role model and mentor to countless students and athletes during his tenure at MVHS. He loved teaching and coaching young people and he was highly respected by students, coaches and teachers alike. Chuck enjoyed fishing with his dad and brothers, mushroom hunting with friends, he loved wrestling and football and even got his wife to watch wrestling matches on TV with him. Chuck liked to work the daily Jumble in the paper, he enjoyed gardening and canning the fresh produce with Deb. Chuck was happiest when he was surrounded by family, whom he adored and would do anything for.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Earleywine of Missouri Valley; stepdaughters, Dana Stockwell and husband, Eric of Beaver Lake, Neb., and Jacqueline Peffer and friend, Eric Damon of Missouri Valley; stepson, Justin Peffer of Omaha; his mother, Anne Earleywine of Little Sioux, Iowa; sister, Elaine Green and husband, Bruce of Primghar, Iowa; brothers, Mike Earleywine and wife, Debbie of Kansas City, Mo., and Rod Earleywine and wife, Molly of Sioux City; seven nieces; two nephews; four grandnieces; and three grandnephews. Chuck was preceded in death by his father, Charles D. Earleywine, and his sister, Sue Anne Earleywine Breeling.
Pallbearers will be Danny Carritt, Marty Carritt, Curtis Boeck, Nick Bean, Duane Ward, Tyler Knott. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Knott, Dwight Avers, Rod Unger, Ryan Hubka, Rod Foutch, Milt Sewell, Mike Urdahl, Russ Kirkpatrick, Frank Smith, Roger Clausen, Keefer Jensen, Bucky Mohn, Don Brothers and Bruce Flint. Chuck's request was in lieu of flowers memorials to the Youth Group of the Presbyterian Church, Little Kids Wrestling Program or Tree Program at the school.
