Fort Dodge Messenger, IowaEAGLE GROVE - Eugene Elmer Christ, the son of George August and Victoria (Mabus) Christ, was born April 14, 1919, in Lakota. He married Lillian C. Bailey and they made their first home in Albert Lea, Minnesota. In 1948, they along with Jim and Irene Lichliter moved to Eagle Grove and founded Christ/Lichliter Gambles' Hardware Store also selling furniture. In 1977, Gene and Lillian continued the business as Christ Furniture and in 1984, sold the business to their son Jim Christ. After their retirement, Gene and Lillian traveled south for the winters and enjoyed traveling and ballroom dancing in the United States and abroad, and meeting new friends in the process. Gene was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, served one term on the Eagle Grove City Council and enjoyed gardening.
Gene passed away Friday, April 23, 2010, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice House in Fort Dodge, at the age of 91 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lillian on January 5, 2009; brother, Raymond Christ and sister, Irene Lichliter. Survivors include his two sons, Tom Christ and wife Gail of Des Moines and Jim Christ and wife Gayle of Eagle Grove; four grandchildren, Jennifer Schild and husband Josh of Eagle Grove, Becca Christ of Cedar Falls, Jonathan and Laura Christ of Des Moines; great-granddaughter, Kendra Schild of Eagle Grove; brother, David Christ of Wells, MN; sister-in-law, Alice Daffinrud of Albert Lea, MN and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Chris Lang officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
