Goldfield, Iowa - Merle E. Sheets, the son of John B. and Ethel (Paskin) Sheets, was born June 29, 1919, in Mount Rose, Missouri. He moved to Goldfield as a small child and lived there most of his life. Merle served in the United States Army during W.W.II from 1942 until 1945. On November 23, 1946, Merle was united in marriage with Bonnie J. Lewis at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple resided and farmed in Goldfield, retiring in 1995. Merle was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goldfield and the American Legion Post #370. He loved his family and spending time outdoors.

Merle passed away at Careage of Clarion on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at the age of 90 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant twin sister, Mae; brother, Virgil Sheets during W.W.II; sister, Alice Waddell; son-in-law, Dean Stephens; infant grandson, Blaine Stephens and grandson, Levi Sheets. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Sheets of Goldfield; daughters, Karren J. Stephens of Clear Lake and Sandra K. Sheets of Elk River, MN, sons, Tom M. Sheets and wife Claudia of LeMars and Gary E. Sheets and wife Sue of Clovis, CA; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Heather and Dan Lukasik and Hailie of Dubuque, IA, Genevieve and Jeff Clemens and Jason of Garner, IA, Andrea and Jeffery Fritz and Ryan of Auburn, WA, Leah and David Hill of Mission, TX, Amy and Kevin Nesdahl and Samuel and Jackson of Blaine, MN, Jacob and Becky Sheets and Allison, Katelyn and Benjamin of Sergeant Bluff, IA and Lisa and Robert Santori and Grace and Sidney of Fresno, CA; brothers and sisters: Beulah Williamson of Mason City, Lila Ortman of Washburn, Raymond and Marge Sheets of Goldfield and John and Lois Sheets of Eagle Grove; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 24, 2010, 1:30 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Goldfield with Pastor Dale Schoening officiating. Visitation is Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Goldfield. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
