Fort Dodge Messenger, IowaFreddie Wilburn Iles, 78, of Ankeny, Iowa formerly of Badger, died Sunday, April 4, 2010, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday at the South Enes Lutheran Church in Vincent with Rev. Susan Stone officiating. Burial will be in the McGuire Bend Cemetery rural Dayton with military honors. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday at the Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Fort Dodge.
Survivors include his wife, Velma Jean Iles of Ankeny; four daughters, Linda Peterson of Gowrie, Janet Behrens of Fort Dodge, Elaine (Rick) Gates of Ankeny, and Beth Anne (Mike) Smith of Ankeny; two brothers, Larry (Carolyn) Iles and Johnnie D. (Memory) Iles both of Stratford; a sister, Irene (Dick) Lass of Ogden, Iowa; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Preceding his in death were his parents and son-in-law, Roger H. Peterson.
Freddie Wilburn Iles, the son of John and Opal (Bass) Iles, was born September 5, 1931 in Boone County, Iowa and graduated from Dayton High School in 1950. On December 8, 1951, he married Velma Jean Sorber in Stratford Iowa. Fred served with the United States Army in the Korean War from January 24, 1952 until January 7, 1954. He served with the 27th Regiment of the 25th Division as Battalion S 2 Sergeant. Fred's commendations during his military service include, Korean Service Medal, W/2 Bronze Services Stars, United Nations Services Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. Fred lived near Dayton from 1955 to 1958 and then lived on an acreage near Badger from 1958 until 2009. In July of 2009 they moved to Ankeny. He worked for the United States Gypsum Mill in Fort Dodge from 1950 until his retirement in 1987 after 37 and half years. He worked in Quality, Research and Chemical Department. He had many special interests, they were his hobby farming and he loved his tractors, his grandchildren, camping, and he loved his "blue truck". Fred was a member of South Enes Lutheran Church in Vincent.
