Larry La Vern Howard, 62, died Monday, Oct. 7, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. He was born Jan. 17, 1940, at Waukon. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth and in Eagle Grove. He married Karen Keeton on Sept. 13, 1958, at Mason City. He served in the United States Navy and the National Guard. He worked as a welder and in the heating and cooling business until he retired in 1995. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, quilt making and photography. Survivors include his three daughters, Pam Newsome of Nevada, Shelley Hogg of Oregon and Bonnie Alley of Colo; one son, Russell Howard of Oregon; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Georgia Black of Des Moines; and four brothers, Dennis Howard of Des Moines, Alan Howard of Colfax, Frank Howard of Des Moines and Wayne Howard of Clear Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Karen, in 1988. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Foust Funeral Home, Eagle Grove. Burial was in the Vernon Cemetery near Renwick. Memorials may be directed to the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames or any charity of choice.
