Alvin V. Messerly, 92, of Fort Dodge, passed away Monday, March 8, 2010, at the Fort Dodge Villa Care Center. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 12, at Trinity United Methodist Church with Reverend Stephen Peters officiating. Burial will be in Colfax Township Cemetery near Vincent. The visitation will be held on Thursday, March 11, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Fort Dodge.

Alvin V. Messerly was born August 4, 1917, to Harley and Freda (Lempke) Messerly in Colfax Township. He lived in the rural Duncombe area where he attended country school and worked on the farm. Alvin married Doris Snell on June 23, 1940, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge. He farmed with his brother Lawrence, in rural Duncombe and Fort Dodge, until the mid 1970's. He owned and operated an electrical business, Messerly Electric, until the early 1960's. Through the years he was a leader of the local 4-H club and Board of Director for NEW COOP, Inc. Alvin also was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge.

Alvin is survived by his daughter Diane Dencklau; son Bruce and his wife Moon Messerly, his daughter-in-law Vickey Messerly, all from Fort Dodge; grandchildren Doyle Dencklau, Blake and his wife Robyn Messerly, Blaine and his wife Tricia Messerly, Travis Messerly, Nick (fiancee Jennifer Carter) Messerly and Tram Messerly; great grandchildren Jessie and Mason Messerly and Lexie and Chase Messerly; and his sister Gladys Rossow. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Doris, son Brian Messerly, granddaughter Darla Dencklau, great-granddaughter Brianna Messerly, brother Lawrence and son-in-law Roger Dencklau.

Alvin enjoyed traveling and bowling but most of all spending time with his family. His family will miss his love, determination and sense of humor. Memorials will be left to the discretion of the family.
