Melva Mae Stufflebeam, 83, of Waverly,Iowa, died Wednesday evening October 22, 1997, at Allen Memorial Hospital of heart failure.
Melva was born on May 5, 1914, in Renwick, Iowa, the daughter of Melvin Donahue McCafferty Hazelwood and Daisy Lee Hawthorne Hazelwood. Her family lived on several farms in Iowa and Minnesota. Melva graduated from high school in Leroy, Minnesota, and then joined her family in Waverly, Iowa, where she attended Wartburg College. She married Leroy on February 24, 1935, in the First Baptist Church in Waverly. Melva managed a rooming house and apartments while staying home to raise three children. For many years she was active in the First Baptist Church in Waverly. Melva enjoyed her activities with Daughters of the American Revolution, researching family history, gardening, spending time with family and friends, sewing and traveling. Her excellent meals will long be remembered. Melva will be greatly missed by family and friends, but we are comforted by the knowledge that she is in the presence of the Lord.
Melva is survived by two children and their spouses, Dr. Daniel L. and Carolyn Stufflebeam of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Bonnie and Bob McNerney of Cedar Rapids,Iowa; 8 grandchildren and their families; David and Connie Saathoff, and Kiersten of Austin, Texas; Randy and Kriste Saathoff, Trevor, Korinna and Eric of Austin, Texas,; Brian and JoAnn Saathoff, Carrington and Gregory of Austin, Texas; Kevin and Janice Stufflebeam and Hunter of El Paso, Texas; Susan and Fred Schiessl of Palo, Iowa; and Debbie and Dan Hensch of Bismarck, North Dakota. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Elma Hazelwood; one brother-in-law, Myron Stufflebeam; many nieces and nephews; cousins, Myrtle Groves-Hazelwood and Ruby Sabel, and dear friends, Mary Ellen and Oliver Reeve. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy; her daugher, Dixie Saathoff; her parents, her brothers, Tommie, James and Joseph, and her sisters, Josie and Goldie.
