Floyd Eugene (Jiggs) Hackbarth of Carlisle, Iowa passed away on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010 at the Veteran's Home in Marshalltown. Floyd was born on May 5, 1930 in Hampton, Iowa to Floyd F. and Juanita King Hackbarth. He was raised on farms in Morgan Township where he attended country schools. Floyd graduated from Popejoy High School in 1947. He also attended Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls, then Iowa State College where he pitched for the Cyclone baseball team. Upon graduation, he was commissioned into the U.S. Army in 1953. In the Army for twenty years, he served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot. In 1973, Floyd retired from the Army as a Lt. Colonel. In 1956, Floyd married Joyce Hurd of Popejoy. Their children are Lee, Michael and Julie. After his military career, he did crop hail adjustment with Blakely Insurance for several years. Floyd enjoyed playing golf, and was also a serious Chicago Cubs fan. "Maybe next year"

Floyd is survived by his wife, Joyce, sons Lee (Tracy) of Ames and Michael (Claire) of Burlington, N.C., and daughter, Julie (Rick) Pickerill of Olathe, Kansas. There are six grandchildren (Zackery, Ryan and Kristen Hackbarth, Malerie, Devin and Derrick Pickerill) and one great-granddaughter, Lucy. Sisters Virginia (Bill) White of Wheatridge, CO, Nancy (Paul) Gish of Arvada, CO, and step-sisters Delores Boeke of Hubbard and Vivian Nelson of Ames also survive their brother, Floyd. He was predeceased by his parents, a step-mother, Helen, and brother, Gary (Gus) Hackbarth.

There was a cremation, to be followed in August this year by a military committal service at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. Condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 337, Carlisle, IA 50047.

Carlisle, Iowa -- Floyd Eugene Hackbarth, 79, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 15, 2010. He was born May 5, 1930 to Floyd and Juanita (King) Hackbarth. After graduation from Popejoy High School, Floyd attended Ellsworth Community College and graduated from Iowa State while pitching for the Cyclone baseball team. Upon graduation in 1953, Floyd was commissioned into the U.S. Army. He spent 20 years in the Army, retiring in 1973 as a Lt. Colonel. He served one tour of Korea and two tours of Vietnam as a helicopter pilot.

Floyd is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joyce (Hurd) Hackbarth, a son, Lee (Tracy) of Ames, a son, Mike (Claire) of North Carolina, a daughter, Julie (Rick) Pickerill of Kansas, six grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. Floyd is also survived by a sister, Virginia (Bill) White of Colorado, and a sister, Nancy (Paul) Gish of Colorado. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gus.

After cremation, Floyd's ashes will be interred at the Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter at a later date. Condolences may be sent to Box 337, Carlisle, IA 50047.
