NEW ULM - Dr. Glenn R. Barnes, 82, of New Ulm, died Monday, January 11, 2010, at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Wayne A. Laitinen officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. There will be full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guardin the church parking lot following the service. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15 and 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of the service at the church on Saturday.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Sylvia Barnes of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Mark Overby of Seattle, Washington, Rachel and Michael Betts of Kent, Washington; sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Laurie Barnes of Federal Way, Washington, Steven and Denise Barnes of New Ulm; grandchildren, Clare, Liz and Ruth Barnes, Katie, Rebekka and Patrick Betts; sisters and brothers-in-law, Gloria (Glenn's twin sister) and Archie Ostberg, Bonnie and Jeff Cashatt, Dorothy Gordon; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Werner and Judy Lemke, Eldon and Beth Lemke, Miriam and Vaughn Vogel and Gena Doyscher. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harry; brothers-in-law, Bill Gordon, David Doyscher and Art Peek; father-in-law and mother-in-law.

Glenn Raymond Barnes was born on November 17, 1927 to Clarence and Loretta (Schoonover) Barnes in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1948. On June 6, 1948 he was united in marriage to Sylvia Vogel in Mankato. Glenn graduated from Dr. Martin Luther College. He then attended Marquette University where he received his Master's Degree in 1965 and his Doctorate in 1970. He taught at St. John's in Newburg, Wisconsin, St. John's in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before coming to Dr. Martin Luther College in 1966and becoming Professor of Education and later Registrar. Glenn was known by his friends as "Doc B". After retiring in 1992 Glenn and Sylvia traveled in their RV to 48 states and many provinces in Canada over a 12-year period. Glenn was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be given to MLC Scholarship Fund, St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church or to the donor's choice.
