BELMOND, IA - Pastor Clifford H. Nelson, 93, most recently of Dixon, Ill., formerly of St. Cloud, Minn., and a native of rural Belmond in Wright County, Iowa, died Tuesday (Jan. 12, 2010) in Dixon, Ill. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, west of Belmond, with the Rev. James Harbaugh officiating. Burial will be in the St. Olaf Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Andrews Funeral Home.

BELMOND - The Rev. Clifford H. Nelson, 93, recently of Dixon Ill., died on Tuesday (Jan. 12, 2010) after a brief hospitalization. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Belmond, with the Rev. James Harbaugh officiating. Burial will follow at St. Olaf Lutheran cemetery and a lunch will be served in the church following interment.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Local arrangements made by Andrews Funeral Homes.

Clifford Harold was born June 17, 1916 in Belmond, the son of Nickolai and Helen Emelia (Oscarson) Nelson. He was raised on a farm west of Belmond and attended local schools. Upon graduation from high school, Clifford attended Waldorf College, Forest City, where he met his future wife, Elnor G. Olson. Clifford and Elnor married on June 4, 1938, at Badger Lutheran Church in Badger. The Nelsons made their home west of Belmond where they farmed and began raising their family. In 1945, Nelson continued his education at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., and Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn. He was ordained in 1949 and served congregations in North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota during 50 years of active ministry.

Nelson is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Elnor; four children, David (Claudia) Nelson, of Grand Detour, Ill.; Naomi (Phil Dahlberg) Nelson, of Houston, Texas; Eldon Nelson of Spring Valley, Wis.; and Stephen (Maureen) Nelson of Park Ridge, Ill.; four grandchildren, Karl Nelson (Holly), Erik Otterstad (Buffy), Kaitlin Nelson, and Benjamin Nelson; and four great-grandchildren, Nicklas, Thomas, and August Nelson, and Tristram Otterstad. He is also survived by one brother, Reuben Nelson; two sisters, Mildred Meyer and Esther Larson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Ingrid Nelson; two brothers, Norris Nelson and Everett Nelson; and one sister, Ruth Lonnevik. Memorial gifts may be directed to the ELCA Missionary Sponsorship Program or the ELCA Vision for Mission Fund - 8765 West Higgins Road, Chicago, IL 60631.
