TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH
ESTHERVILLE, IOWABertha Louise (Herman) Heinzig, the daughter of Christian and Helena (Martin) Herman was born on the family farm September 4, 1913, in Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan, Canada. She joined her brother Ernest and sister, Pauline and later welcomed sister, Cecilie. Bertha departed this life on Friday, September 28, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 94 years old. She began her education in a rural country school and later attended school in Yellow Grass. On October 18, 1933, she was united in marriage to Reverend William Heinzig in Yellow Grass. During the early years of their marriage, they served several small congregations in Saskatchewan and also in Edmonton Alberta Canada. Three children were born to them in Canada, Harold, Elaine and William. Bertha and Pastor "Willie" came to Burlington, Iowa in 1948, then served congregations at Belmond and Correctionville, Iowa, and before their retirement moved to Sibley, Illinois. They retired to Port Charlotte, Florida in 1972, where they along with two other retired pastors, began a new mission - the Church of the Living Waters - so much for retirement! Pastor Willie passed on to his heavenly home in 1993. Bertha was very active in all the churches they served. She was organist, choir director, confirmation instructor and organized the local Women's Aid Society (now Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Women). Bertha also helped with Circles and Bible Studies. Bertha enjoyed entertaining, cooking, baking for family and friends. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, needle point, reading and gardening, especially flowers which she still enjoyed in the flower beds at Good Samaritan. Bertha also enjoyed daily visits with her sister, Celie who resides there also.
Left to cherish Bertha's memory are her children, Pastor Harold Heinzig and his wife, Irene of Wallingford, Iowa; William Heinzig of Ankeny, Iowa; Elaine Klingensmith and her husband, David of Kingsley, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; fourteen great-great-grandchildren and sister Cecilie Black. She has been preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Ernest and sister, Pauline.
