Norval "Jerry" Mitchell, Lansing, Age 81, passed away Friday, December 18, 2009 in Lansing. Born December 25, 1927 in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the son of Norval Jack and Florence (McVicker) Mitchell. Jerry served his country with the U.S. Navy, one of the lone survivors on the U.S.S. Indianapolis. He was a valued member of the V.F.W. Post #701, was a member of North Presbyterian Church and loved to winter in Florida, where he enjoyed golfing and fishing. Jerry served 38 years with the Board of Water and Light, where he met and enjoyed many good friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Charlotte Moyer; brother, Kenneth Mitchell and son-in-law, Ben Jacobs. Surviving are his wife, Doris; children, Kathy Jacobs and Karen (Mark) Ewing; step-children, James (Marilyn) McDonald, Joann (Robert) Farlin and Larry (Joan) McDonald; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; brother, James (Joyce) Mitchell; 2 sisters, Mary (Bill) Rust and Donna Wyman. A Celebration of Jerry's life will be held Tuesday, December 29, 11:00 a.m., at North Presbyterian Church with Rev. Timothy Chon officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the Church. For those wishing, memorial donations may be sent to the VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, MI.
