November 2002Charles Thomas Campbell, 77, of Alexander, Iowa, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002 at the Good Shepherd Care Center. His funeral service was held Sunday, Nov. 10, at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. A graveside service was held the same day at the Alexander Cemetery, where military honors were conducted by the American Legion Post #0658 of Latimer. Memorials may be directed to the family of Charles Campbell to be distributed between Hospice of North Iowa and Good Shepherd Health Care Center.
Charles was born Aug. 9, 1925 in Mifflin County, Penn., a son of Samuel J. and Ethel May (Treweek) Campbell. He entered into service in the United States Navy on Aug. 5, 1943 and served during World War II on a PT boat in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged on March 10, 1946 and became a member of the Ancient Order of the Deep. He was duly initiated into the Solemn Mysteries of the Deep, having crossed the Equator Aboard the USS Boots. Charles was united in marriage to Helen Mae Perkins on March 29, 1946 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Seattle, Wash. They lived in Alexander, Iowa from 1961 until 1995. Charles worked as a custodian for the Alexander School District for many years. In 1974, he began work in maintenance for the Iowa Department of Transportation at the Latimer Garage. Charles was an active member of the American Legion Post #0658 in Latimer and was a volunteer fireman for many years.
Charlie is survived by five children and their spouses, Gary and Bev Campbell of Cresco, Iowa, Karen and Craig Bartholomew of Mason City, Iowa, Jeanne Yerman of Las Vegas, N.V., Jerry and Jean Campbell of Clear Lake, and Don and Rona Campbell of Latimer; 14 grandchildren, Lee Campbell, Ian and his wife, Sarah Campbell, Stephanie Marker, Chad and his wife, Melissa Bartholomew, Krista and Michelle Bartholomew, Michelle, Paul, Monica, Melissa, and Pamela Yerman, Amanda and Valerie Campbell, and Joe and Janae Campbell; two great-grandchildren, James Yerman and Blane Bartholomew; five sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen, in August 1995; one brother; two sisters; a son-in-law, James Yerman; one sister-in-law and four brothers-in-law.
