STEWARTVILLE. MN -- Funeral services for Marienus "Sharkey" Davids will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Sumner Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rob Kopp and Rev. John Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Millet Cemetery, Sumner Township, Fillmore County.
Mr. Davids, age 91, of Sumner Township, Fillmore County, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at the Stewartville Care Center. Marienus was born Dec. 24, 1917, in Kanawha, Iowa, to James and Katie (Bakker) Davids. He graduated from Kanawha High School and was united in marriage to Mary Roselyn Attig on Dec. 24, 1954, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Together they farmed in the Kanawha area until moving to Sumner Township in 1957, where he continued farming until the time of his death. Marienus was an active member of the Sumner Center United Methodist Church, was a member of the Fillmore County Farm Bureau, and served as a delegate for the Fillmore County Republican Party. He was an avid reader of history, enjoyed traveling and following the Minnesota Twins, and was also a member of Minnesotans Concerned For Life.
He is survived by his children, Joyce (Eric) Christianson of Austin, Texas, Gregory M. (Bonnie) Davids of Preston, Maureen (David) Grimaud of Chapin, S.C., and Patricia (Larry) Shoemaker of Gretna, Neb., and a daughter-in-law, Debbie Davids of Rochester; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Matthew Davids, Christopher Davids and his wife Heather and their daughters Marli and Madelyn, Geoffrey and Marilyn Grimaud, Katie and her husband Eric Larson, Kimberlie and her husband Matt Dillon, and Karrie Davids and her fiance Joshua Stai. He is also survived by two brothers, John Davids and wife Neva of San Diego, and Donald Davids and wife Sue of Elkhart, Ind.; and a sister, Della Davids of Iowa City, Iowa. Marienus was preceded in death by his wife Mary Roselyn in 1996, a son Jonathan in 2002, and siblings Bert, L. Robert, Bill, Lena and Ann.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
