ALBIA, Iowa — Harvey Clair Newman, age 82, of rural Albia, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at his home in rural Albia. Harvey was born to Hershal and Nina (Potts) Newman on July 22, 1927, in rural Monroe County. He graduated from Albia High School in 1945. He worked on a farm near Garner, Iowa, and General Mills in Belmond until returning to Albia, where he worked for 21 years at John Morrell and Company. He farmed his entire life. In 1948 Harvey married Rosemary Willey at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were blessed with four children, Merlin, Gary, Randy and Marlene.Harvey enjoyed farming, tractors, airplanes and old-time country music. Harvey and Rosemary attended Rathbun Country Music shows for 27 years. He also enjoyed looking after his cattle, bus trips, family reunions and spending time outside. He enjoyed living a simple life, farming with his wife. His grandkids and great-grandkids were the joy of his life. Since his stroke six years ago, Harvey has made the best of his life with a great sense of humor and spending time working on projects around the farm. He was also a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
He will be missed by his wife of 61 years, Rosemary Newman of rural Albia; three sons, Merlin and Christy Newman of Albia, Gary and Jane Newman of Valley Springs, S.D., and Randy and Brenda Newman of Albia; one daughter, Marlene and Larry Roush of Ottumwa; 11 grandchildren, Stephanie (Chad) Coalbank, Holly (Skyler) Nicholas, Matt Newman, Mary (Jesse) Van Essen, Brigitte Newman, Miranda, Brianna and Marissa Caudill, Bethany Roush, Amber (Eric) Powers and Josh (Sarah) Chance; and seven great-grandchildren. Harvey is also survived by one sister, Vera Newman of Albia; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Harvey is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donald and Raymond Newman.
Visitation will begin today from noon to 8 p.m. at the Winfield Funeral Home. Harvey's family will be present from 6-8 p.m. this evening also at the Winfield Funeral Home in Albia.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia with Rev. Neil Montz officiating. Burial will follow services at Oak View Cemetery in Albia. Memorials have been established to the Monroe County Leisure Lounge or to Trinity United Methodist Church.
