Richard "Dick" Smith, 85, of 390 Glen Oak St., died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, surrounded by his loving family. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by Dubuque America Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 390 N. Grandview Ave. Friends also may call from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
He was born on July 6, 1924, in Clarion, Iowa , son of Earl and Ella Dell (Sumner) Smith. Dick served in the Army during World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He married Ruby Anderson on Sept. 9, 1945, in Clarion; she preceded in death in 1977. In 1979, he married Maggie Blocklinger. He was an insurance agent with State Farm for 40 years. Dick loved to play golf, cards and shoot pool at the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Maggie, of Dubuque; four daughters, Patsy (Bill) Ball, of Dubuque, Peg Bacon, of Solon, Ohio, Penny (Dick) Hanssen, of Duluth, Minn., and Pam (Hector) Cadena, of St. Paul, Minn.; two stepchildren, Peg (Jim) Thill, of Dubuque, and Paul (Amie) Blocklinger, of Coralville, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; two sisters; and three stepsons, Bart, David and Ken Blocklinger. In lieu of flowers, a Richard S. Smith Memorial Fund has been established.
The family would like to thank Jenni, the nurses and staff at ManorCare for their loving care for Dick these last few months.
