MRS. M. WALLEN DIED LAST SUNDAY NIGHT

Was One of Wright County's Pioneer Settlers, Coming here Over Sixty-Six Years Ago

Mrs. Manuel Wallen passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Hirt at Woolstock, Sunday, Jan. 3rd at 10 p.m. She had been a resident of Iowa for 79 years and of Wright county 66 years.

Isabelle Wallen, daughter of Zachariah and Catherine (Ford) Spurlin was born in Illinois, Feb. 16, 1849, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Hirt in Woolstock, Iowa, at 10 p.m. Sunday evening, Jan 3, 1937, at the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 17 days. Mrs. Wallin was one of a family of 11 children, she being the last of her family. Her early life was spent in Lawrence county, Indiana, until in her eighth year she came with her parents overland to Iowa in 1858, settling in Grundy county, Iowa, later moving to Marshall county, Ia. She grew to womanhood in Marshall county and on Oct. 8 1865, she was united in marriage to Manuel Wallen. They first resided in Marshall county, coming to Wright county to live in March, 1871, near what is now the town of Woolstock. Mr. and Mrs. Wallen were the parents of seven children, namely: Ida, Frank, Rose, Norris, George, Maude and Earle. Frank and Norris passed away in childhood and one son, Frank Wallen, in February, 1918.

In the fall of 1895, Mr. and Mrs. Wallen left their farm and moved to Woolstock where they resided until 1911 and then moved to Eagle Grove, Mr. Wallen preceding her in death, Dec. 20. 1921. Since Mr. Wallen's death, Mrs. Wallen has made her home with her children. She has been for many years a member of the Methodist church of Woolstock, and was also one of the oldest members of the Woman's Relief Corp. Mrs. Wallen has lived a long and useful life and was highly esteemed by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her passing three daughters: Mrs. Ida Boughton and Mrs. Rose Woodard of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Maude Hirt of Woolstock, and one son, Earl Wallen of Council Bluffs; also 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren besides many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Kubitschek & Kastler funeral parlors in Eagle Grove, Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m., with Rev. Kilbourn in charge. Six great grandsons acted as pallbearers, namely: Verl, Merlin and Yale Wallen of Glenville, Minn., Robert and John Woodard of Albert Lea, Minn., and George Helmick of Clarion. Interment was in the family lot in Rose Hill cemetery. Those in attendance from out of town were: Earl Wallen of Council Bluffs; Mr. and Mrs. Novio Wallen, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Woodard and sons, Robert and John of Albert Lea, Minn.; Mrs. Ellen Wallen Hensen, Mr. and Mrs. Rea Wallen and sons Verl, Merlin, and Lyle, and Mrs. Velda Greeman of Glenville Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Randall Ewalt of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Thayer of Belmond; Mr. and Mrs. Rolla Jones and Mrs. Hester Moon of Goldfield; also many old friends from Woolstock.
