Betty C. Johnson, 84, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009. She was born May 24, 1925, in Clarion, Iowa. Betty attended Drake University and the American Institute of Business, before accepting a position with the IRS, in Des Moines, Iowa. With the marriage to her High School sweetheart, Hal Johnson, in 1946, came one of the most prestigious jobs in life, a military wife and mother. She was active in Military Base service and assisted with activities. Betty received several awards for this work. After 30 years in the service, Betty and Hal retired to Port Charlotte. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte, where she served as an usher. Betty was also a Charter member of the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club, serving on several committees of the club.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Col. Hal Johnson; children, Jim (Marilyn) Johnson of Portland, Ore., Susan (John) Turner of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren; Ryan, Randy, John and Jessica; three great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Ryan; and family of Iowa. The service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte, with the Rev. Mark Knowles officiating. Friends may call Tuesday from 1:30 p.m. until the service time at the church. Private entombment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte, 2230 Hariet St., Port Charlotte, FL 33952; or TideWell Hospice and Palliative Care, 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, FL 34238. Arrangements are by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda, Fla.
