Carl F. “Pete” Callies was born March 13, 1904, in Portland Township rural Burt, Iowa, the son of Robert and Mary (Gayer) Callies. He attended Buffalo Township School, Titonka High School before graduating from University High School in Iowa City, Iowa. He then went on to attend the University of Iowa for two years. Carl returned to Titonka in 1929 and purchased the Standard Oil Station and tank wagon. On June 8, 1931, Carl was united in marriage to Fay Rolfsema at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. After their marriage they lived in Titonka and Pete continued to run the Standard Station before selling his business and working for K&H Coop Oil Company while beginning to farm with his father. Carl and Fay and their young family later moved to a farm west of town and continued to farm until retiring in 1958 and in 1962 they moved to their present home in Titonka. Carl was very active in the community serving as a volunteer fireman, and on various boards over the years such as K&H Coop; Farm Bureau, ASCS; Titonka Consolidated School as well as various church boards at the Titonka Methodist Church, where he was a member since 1938. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, gardening and traveling across the U.S. delivering Winnebago Motor Homes. Carl and Fay especially enjoyed their summer lake home in Pequot Lakes, Minnesota, and their winter home in Pharr, Texas.

Carl died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at his home in Titonka, Iowa. He was 103. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon and Jim Engel of Maple Grove, MN; Carol and Ray Burchett of Sun City West, AZ; Darlene and Dean Lust of Chickaloon, AK; son-in-law, Bill and Wendy Amesbury of Titonka; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and nephew, Lee and Georgia Stockwell of Titonka. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Fay, June 8, 2006; daughter, Shirley Amesbury; brothers, Arthur, Fred and Frank Callies; sisters, Emma Wiese, Martha Carter, Clara Lichtenberger, Lena Hansen and Louise Stockwell.

Carl’s family would like to extend a special Thank You to all of Carl’s caregivers, which enabled him to stay at home. Carl’s services were held on 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 4, 2007 at the Buffalo Township Cemetery, Titonka, Iowa.
