April 17, 1912 - April 11, 2003

John George Ely, 90, of Webster City, died Friday, April 11 at Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City. The body has been cremated. A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 15 at the Vernon Lutheran Church near Dows, with Rev. Doug Tiffany officiating. Burial was in the Vernon Lutheran Cemetery near Dows.

John George Ely was born April 17, 1912, on a farm in Boone County, the son of Roy and Minnie (Wolber) Ely. He attended rural schools in Boone County. He married Martella Tingwald on Nov. 10, 1935, in Grimes. The couple resided in Beaver and in 1937 moved to a farm south of Ogden. In 1952, they moved to a farm northeast of Blairsburg. Along with being a successful farmer, John sold Oliver tractors and seed corn, and did custom farming. He moved to Webster City in 1999.

He is survived by one daughter, Ila Marie Luhmann of Webster City; two sons, Richard and wife Lynn of Williams and Randy and wife Belinda of Webster City; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Earl Ely and wife Evelyn of Boone and Ralph Ely; one sister, Irene Crowell of Ogden; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by her parents, his wife, one son, one great-grandchild and three sisters. Memorials may be directed to the family for use at their discretion. Carson Funeral Home in Ogden is in charge of the arrangements.
