Joan M. Whitney, 94, formerly of 1030 Memorial Dr. SE, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, in Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. Services - 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, All Saints Catholic Church, where a rosary will be recited at 9 a.m. and friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial - Mount Calvary Cemetery. The Rev. David O'Connor will officiate. Turner East Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include her friends, Betty Bockenstedt, Sylvia Pecinovsky and several other good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Margaret McClusky Whitney; a sister, Mary (William) Mannion, formerly of Northport, N.Y.; and a brother, Frank, formerly of Oregon.

Joan was born March 31, 1909, in Oelwein, the daughter of Alfred and Margaret McClusky Whitney. She attended schools in Clarion and Oelwein. Joan was employed at the Roosevelt Hotel and later at the Cedar Rapids Airport. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and a Mercy Hospital volunteer for many years. A special thanks to the nurses and staff at Hallmar Residential Care Center for their excellent care of "Joni" for 8 years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to All Saints Catholic Church or Mercy Hospital Medical Foundation.
