Robert L. Mayes, 84, of 2120 Brockman Ave., died of cancer Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, in St. Luke's Hospital. Services: 9 a.m. Tuesday, Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial: Troy Mills Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Tom Parrott of Christ Community United Methodist Church will officiate. Surviving in addition to his wife, Lela, are two daughters, Becky High (Phillip) of Marion and Janell Ackerman (Terry) of Center Point; a sister, Alice Espe of Clarion; seven grandchildren, Rodney, William, Sarah, Michael, Benjamin, Wesley and Alan; six great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ila Mayes of Clarion. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Robert was born Sept. 13, 1921, in Clarion, the son of Lloyd L. and Hazel (DeLano) Mayes. He married Lela Grace Rowe on Aug. 31, 1957, in Cedar Rapids. He was a brake man/conductor for Rock Island Railroad for 24 years. He was a member of Christ Community United Methodist Church and the American Legion Hanford Post No. 5. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A memorial fund has been established.
