Eugene “Gene” Nicholson, 93, formerly of Iowa, died Monday, March 17, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Nicholson was born June 11, 1914 in Little Cedar, Iowa the only child of the late Mary Cross Nicholson and Fred Nicholson. He graduated from Little Cedar High School. Mr. Nicholson was a veteran of the United States Army serving in WW II in General Patton's 3rd Army as a motor pool mechanic. He married Rachel Gambell who preceded him in death in 1968. He was employed as an auto mechanic, appliance repairman, and a foreman designing lampshades and also in later years as a custodian. In 1972 he married Doris Spitler Floy, he lived 91 years in the state of Iowa, in Forest City, Clear Lake, Clarion and Grinnell, before moving to Wake Forest, North Carolina in 2005. He was a much loved and well respected member of Christ Our Hope PCA Church in Wake Forest.
Mr. Nicholson is survived by his wife of 35 years, Doris Nicholson, sons Gary Nicholson of Buckeye, Ariz. and Greg Nicholson of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Gail Wallace of La Vergne, Tenn. and Gloria Miner and husband Ken of Grinnell, Iowa; two step-daughters Liana Anderson and husband C. Michael of Wake Forest, N.C. and Mary Locke and husband Rodney of Glenwood, Iowa; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and seven step-great grandchildren, he is preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, great granddaughter, step-grandson and two step-great grandsons.
A memorial service was held Friday, March 21, 2008 at Christ Our Hope Presbyterian Church in Wake Forest, N.C.. with Rev. Scott Cook and Rev. Chris Bower officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to Christ Our Hope Presbyterian Church in America, 203 Capcom Avenue, #107, Wake Forest, N.C. 27587. Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Center was in charge of arrangements.
