Eugene R. Carter, 72, of Kanawha died Tuesday (June 13, 1995) at the Kanawha Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Lee officiating. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery at Spencer, Iowa. Visitation will be held from noon until 6 p.m. Friday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church. Willim Funeral Home of Clarion is in charge of arrangements.

Eugene R. Carter was born April 30, 1923, at Dickens, Iowa, the son of Leonard Carter and Mae (nee) Jones Carter. He graduated from Dickens High School in 1940. During World War II, he served with the United States Navy. He graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Mo., in 1949. Gene was united in marriage with Patricia Heick on Sept. 7, 1952. He later married Shirley Quinn. Gene worked for Nelson-Berger Funeral Home in Sioux City for two years and then was in LuVerne, Minn., for five years returning to Iowa with the Huffman Funeral Home at Glidden. In 1962, he purchased the funeral home and furniture business in Kanawha and in 1972 acquired a funeral home in Britt. He retired in 1985. He was a member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church, American Legion, ABC Club, past Kanawha School board member and remained active in community affairs after his retirement. He was also a Mason and a former member of the Britt Rotary Club. He was a longtime member of the Iowa
Funeral Directors Association and District #8.

Those left to cherish his memory are his four children, Bruce Carter and his wife, Faith, of Peoria, Ill., Todd Carter and his wife, Luann of Waterville, Kan., Jane Wellik and her husband, Philip of Wausau, Wis., and Ann Baier and her husband, Mark of Iowa Falls; eight grandsons, one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. Those preceding him in death are his parents and one sister, Mary Alice Rouse.
