DOWS - Donald Ammerman, age 76, of Dows, passed away Wednesday (July 1, 2009) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral services for Donald Ammerman will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday July 6, 2009, at the Presbyterian Church in Dows. Ministry assistant Brian Cushman will officiate. Burial will take place in the Mount Hope Cemetery near Dows. Graveside military rites will be provided by the Dows American Legion. Visitation for Donald Ammerman will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, July 5, 2009 at the Dugger Funeral Home, 100 North Lee Street in Dows and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
Donald Junior, the son of Leo and Lena Martin Ammerman was born on Aug. 17, 1932, in Goldfield. He grew up in Goldfield and Clarion where he attended schools. In 1953, Don entered the U.S. Army. He served as a radio operator in Germany. Donald was honorably discharged in 1955. Don was united in marriage to Fern Ladd on Oct. 6, 1956 at Don's aunt and uncle's house in Dows. The couple made their home in Dows where they raised their family. Don worked as a salesman and repairman for the lumberyard and gas station in Dows. He also worked for 12 years at the Dows golf course. Don enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was fond of cooking and eating the game he caught. He was a past member of the Dows American Legion.
Don is survived by a daughter, Donna Bouillon and husband, Maurice, of Dows, two sons, Gary of Dows and Dale of Lake City; six grandchildren, Corey, D.J., Tanata, Sheldon, Stephanie, Nathan; a sister, Betty Hillpipre and husband, Ronald, of Homer, Ill.; three brothers, Lyle of Clarion, Ronald and wife, Dorothy, of Grand Island, Neb., Robert and wife, Mija, of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister-in-law, Shirley Crafton, and husband, Donald, of Espanola, N.M.; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Fern, in 2004; two sisters, Melvina and Lavonne; and two brothers, Melvin and Kenneth. Dugger Funeral Homes, 100 North Lee St., Dows.
