Homer J. Paine is Iowa's New Gold Star
Word comes today from the father of Homer J. Paine of Eagle Grove that the former university student died in France of pneumonia, Sept 26, 1918. The young man began a pre-medic course at the university in the fall of 1917, but left soon after to join the colors. He was inducted into the service at Jefferson Barracks, December 13, 1917, and was sent overseas with the 258th Aero Squadron in the latter part of August of this year. His death came about a month after his arrival in France. While at the university the young soldier was very much interested in the study of military science, and was working to become a cadet officer under former Capt. Mamma. The death of this brave aviator adds a new gold star to the university's service flag. Another son of democracy has cheerfully given his "last full measure of devotion" to his nation. Iowa will long honor his memory.
