Hon. Joseph D. Morse Dies After Long Illness

At seven o’clock Friday morning, Hon. Joseph D. Morse passed peacefully away after an illness of more than a year, at his home in Cook’s Corners near the old farm where he was born 71 years ago. For a few years he lived in this city but longed to get back near the old farm and scenes of his childhood days. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the 1st regiment of Engineers and Mechanics. In 1892 he was elected to the legislature, and was re-elected in serving from 1893 to 1897 as a Republican representative.

Mr. Morse was a member of the Washington Club and also of the Lincoln Club and greatly enjoyed the meetings while he was able to attend them. He leaves beside his wife Emily R. Morse, a daughter Mrs. A. R. Locke of Ionia and two sons Rufus and John L. Morse of Otisco. A brother Hon. A. B. Morse of Ionia and two sisters and a brother residing in Clarion and Belmond Iowa also surviving him.

The funeral service was held Tuesday under the auspices of the G.A.R. Post. Rev. E. E. Branch of Ionia also officiated with interment in the Otisco cemetery. There was a very large attendance of old neighbors and friends and members of the G.A.R. and W.R.C. Mr. and Mrs. Deck Hoppough sang and Rev. Branch spoke many comforting words to the bereaved family.
