HAMPTON, VA - Carl J. Holler, died Saturday, June 6, 2009 after a courageous battle with ALS- Lou Gehrig's Disease. He was born Sept. 14, 1924, in Goldfield, Iowa, son of Zora and Dr. Carl Holler. He grew up in Ft. Payne, Ala. He served his country in WW II as an infantryman assigned to the armored division in the Ardennes Forrest and at wars end was in Czechoslovakia. Carl traveled extensively as a tourist visiting all seven continents and 43 countries. He is survived by his stepson, Henry W. McElroy; and spent 20 wonderful years with the love of his life and travel companion, Velma I. Newman. A funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m., prior to the service on Tuesday, at the funeral home.
