Evelyn Teldora (Johnson) VonHagen was born on February 22, 1919, in Winnebago County, Iowa, near Leland, the daughter of Oscar Alvin and Edna Annetta (Langerud) Johnson. She attended and received her education in the rural Winnebago Country schools, and also attended Forest City High School. After completing her schooling Evelyn worked as the hired girl for various families in their home. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Ryerson on December 31, 1940. He preceded her in death on February 10, 1968. In 1941, they purchased a farm south and west of Northwood before moving to Kanawha, Iowa in 1946, where they continued to farm. In 1950, they moved back to their farm in rural Northwood. In the late 1950’s Evelyn began working for Mode O’ Day in Mason City. Evelyn also worked for Deluxe Mfg. in Lake Mills, and various nursing homes in the north Iowa area. She was united in marriage to Oliver VonHagen on February 24, 1974. He preceded her in death on February 27, 2005.

Evelyn enjoyed gardening, embroidering, crocheting, and was a great dancer, but her greatest love and enjoyment was her family and friends. She was a member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church, ladies aid and church circle, taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir, and was a member of the Eagles in Albert Lea, MN.

Left to cherish her memory are her children; Dorothy (Terry) Rose of Walker, MN, Carolyn (Mike) Strub of Ingleside, Ill, Garald Ryerson of Northwood, Renae Ryerson of Lake Mills, Sherry Benson of Albert Lea, MN, Kimberly Halvorson of Lake Mills, and Leslie Ryerson of Mason City; 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; a brother; Larry (Sherry) Johnson of Lubbock, TX; numerous nieces and nephews, many other extended family members and friends. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Lawrence Ryerson, and Oliver VonHagen; two daughters, Lou Ann, and Janis; seven brothers; Wayne, Leonard, Orville, Norman, Clifford, Kenneth, and Vernon Johnson, and two sisters, Elaine Querry, and Pearl Book.
