Berneta R. Harson Dunham, age 80, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Thursday, April 20, 2006 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 24, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Tom Hinshaw officiating. Burial will be in the Jefferson, Iowa, City Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Friends may call on Sunday, April 23, 2006 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 3:00 to 5:00.
Berneta Ruth Harson was born January 10, 1926 on a farm near Rowan in Wright County, Iowa to Harry James Harson and Carol Velva (Hoke) Harson. She attended grade school in Alexander, Iowa and graduated from Emmetsburg Public High School in 1943. Berneta continued her education at the former Iowa State Teachers College, now U.N.I., in Cedar Falls and started her teaching career on her 18th birthday at a country school north of Emmetsburg. Berneta later earned a masters degree from Iowa State University. She taught in various elementary schools in Iowa, among them were Cylinder, Kingsley, Jefferson, Paton-Churdan, and Boone. At the time of her retirement, she had been principal at Remsen-Union for 19 years.
On June 10, 1951, Berneta was united in marriage to Vernon V. Dunham, Sr. Their union was blessed with two children, Vernon, Jr. and Nancy. Berneta was a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother who treasured the time she spent with her family. In her later years, she delighted in her grandchildren and loved to attend their activities and just spend time with them. She enjoyed painting, sewing and reading, and spent many hours in community service. Berneta was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Storm Lake. She will be missed daily by all those who knew and loved.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Vernon Dunham, Jr. of Paullina, Iowa; daughter Nancy Steward and husband Thomas of Storm Lake; grandsons Thomas, David and James Steward of Storm Lake; sister Marion and husband Cecil Morgan of Storm Lake; sister Janice and husband Clifford Christensen of Alta, Iowa; sister Lowene Heaverlo of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sister Carol Douglas of Spencer, Iowa; sister Nancy Glackin of Dickens, Iowa; brother Don Harson and wife Virginia of Hartley, Iowa; sisters-in-law Ruth Harson of Emmetsburg, Iowa and Bonnie Harson of Spencer, Iowa; nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. Preceding Berneta in death were her parents, her husband, Vernon Dunham, Sr.; two infant brothers; brothers Robert Harson and Harold Harson, Sr.; and brothers-in-law Jim Heaverlo, Lyle Douglas and Al Glackin.
