Webster City, IA -- Mary A. Struchen, 80, longtime resident of Webster City, died peacefully in her home on May 16, 2009 after a long illness. Visitation will be on Tuesday May 26, from 5-8 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church at 1229 Kathy Lane in Webster City. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 1 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church followed by refreshments in the church social hall.

Mary Alice Hovland was born in Story City, Iowa on April 4, 1929 as the only daughter of Al and Genevieve Hovland and baby sister to brothers Henry and John. Mary received her education in the Webster City Schools and graduated from University Northern Iowa in 1951, after which she pursued a life long career in music and teaching. She married William W. Nott Jr. in 1951, and they were blessed with three children, Michael, Laura, and David Nott. In 1968, she joined Donald D. Struchen in marriage and gained a stepson, David E. Struchen. During these years she was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, directing their choirs for many years, and she remained active in PEO, Trinity Lutheran Church Mary Martha Circle, and the American Association of University Women. She also supported Webster City Community Theater with performances in roles, choruses, and as orchestra director. She was a full time music teacher in Eagle Grove, Northeast Hamilton, and Webster City School districts until she retired in 1992.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Genevieve Hovland, and her brother, Henry (Bud). She is survived by her husband, Don Struchen of Webster City IA, her brother, John Hovland and wife Phyllis of Scottsdale AZ, Bud's wife, Lucia Hovland of Knoxville TN, and children, Mike Nott and wife Dorene of North Liberty IA, Laura Nott of Dana Point CA, Dave Nott and wife Kathy of Apopka FL, and David Struchen and wife Nicole of Jewell IA, plus four grandchildren, Jennifer Nott-Cross, Becki Nott-Bratton, Christopher Nott, and Gabrielle Struchen, and two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Jacob Cross.

Memorial donations may be given in lieu of flowers. Memorial funds are established for two Webster City organizations in appreciation for their loving support: The Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund for their Meals Delivery Service and the Hamilton County Hospice.
