Edith L. Soma, 103, Belmond died Monday, January 1, 2001, at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond. Funeral services were held Friday, January 5, 2001 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond with Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery. Music was provided by Eldoris Bunnell, organist, and Marilyn Janssen, soloist. Ushers were Loren Bamford and Frances Morris. Honorary Casketbearers were Keith Sheller, Duane Soma, Steve Soma, Bob Pasquariello, Jeff Soma and Rod Soma. Casketbearers were Jim Pasquariello, Dale Sheller, Don Soma, Jerry Soma, Leslie Soma and Ken Soma.

Edith, the daughter of Thomas and Christine Nelson Lundy, was born February 19, 1897 near Kanawha in Hancock County. She grew up in the Kanawha area where she attended county schools and was baptized and confirmed at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Edith married Jovial Soma on December 2, 1917. The couple made their home northwest of Belmond where Edith was a housewife. In 1932, they moved into Belmond. Jovial passed away in 1978. Edith later moved to the Belmond Community Apartments in 1982 and entered the Belmond Health Care Center in 1993. Edith enjoyed reading and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two daughters, Joan in infancy and Ardell Kinseth; one grandchild, two great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two sisters, Anna Lundy and Bertha Arthur and five brothers, Clint, Joe, Holden, Thomas, and Elmer. Survivors include: two daughters: Jean Sheller of Port Orchard, WA, and Inez Pasquariello of Belmond; one son, Irvin of Marshalltown; 22 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
