Harold Loden, 83, of Athens GA, died September 8. He earned his MS at the University of Georgia and his PhD at Texas A&M. He served in the Air Force and then joined the University of Georgia Agronomy Department. He joined Anderson-Clayton Seeds in 1951 and became general manager of Paymaster Seeds. For a time he worked in Belmond. Later he became executive vice president of the American Seed Trade Association and then organized a seed consulting business. Loden was recognized as an authority on plant variety protection and helped obtain patent protection for U.S. seedsmen. He served on several U.S. government committees and was well known in the seed industry. He is survived by his wife Celestia, of Athens, her three sisters, and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Harold Loden, 83 of Athens GA, died Saturday, September 8, 2001. Dr. Loden was born August 17, 1918, Son of Dr. and Mrs. G. L. Loden of Colbert, GA. He was a 1938 graduate of the University of Georgia where he obtained an MS degree in 1939. He then attended Texas A&M where he received his PhD in genetics. Dr. Loden served as an officer to many seed trade organizations and was named on honorary member of more seed trade organizations than any other member of the seed industry. He was the 1963 President of the Southern Seedsmen’s Association, and he served on Advisory Boards and Committees for every U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 1954 to 1983. He represented the seed trade in its legislative and regulatory activities in the U.S. Congress and state and federal agencies.
