June 2, 1997BELMOND-- Ethel L. Avery, 94, died Sunday (June 1, 1997) at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. Jack Paisley officiating. Interment will be in the Amsterdam Cemetery, Goodell. Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today with a 2:30 p.m. parish rosary and an 8 p.m. scripture service at Tenold Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Ethel L. (O'Rourke) Avery, the daughter of James and Anna (McGurk) O'Rourke, was born July 5, 1902, at Britt. She attended Britt Public School until she was 14, and the family moved to Kanawha, where she graduated from Kanawha High School in 1922. She attended Hamilton Business School for a while, and was united in marriage to Anson Emmett Avery of Goodell. They resided on the same farm east of Goodell all their married life. After her husband's death in 1985, Ethel continued to live on the farm for 8 years, until failing health required hospitalization, and she then became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center.
She is survived by her daughter, Lois Ann Hafermann and her husband, Daryl, of Thornton; grandchildren, Sherri and her husband, Ron Barnes, David Hafermann and his family and Scott Hafermann and his wife, Jo; seven great-grandchildren; three nieces; and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Anson; brother, Lloyd O'Rourke; and sisters, Edna Gilligan and Viva Parker.
