HARDY, IA - Funeral services for Elsie Mae Clowes, 83, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Renwick, with the Rev. Karen Dearchs officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in rural Renwick. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Renwick.

Elsie Mae Clowes was born on May 18, 1916 at LuVerne, to Walter and Tillie (Anderson) Hunt. She attended country school near LuVerne and then graduated from the LuVerne High School. Elsie then received her Normal training at the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. Elsie taught country school near LuVerne until 1940. On Feb. 5, 1940, Elsie was married to W. Donald Clowes at her parents' home in LuVerne. The couple farmed near Renwick until 1968. Donald and Elsie then moved to a farm near Hardy and continued farming until Donald's death in 1992. Elsie was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Renwick, where she also belonged to the United Methodist Women. Elsie belonged to the Know Your Neighbor Club and the Senior Citizens in Renwick. She enjoyed sewing and knitting and when she and Donald were farming, Elsie loved to help with the field work and take care of the livestock. Elsie became a resident of the Long-Term Care Unit in Humboldt in November of 1998. She died there on Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at the age of 83.

Elsie is survived by her three daughters, Dawn Jensen and her husband, Ed, of Wellman, Diane Adam and her husband, Loren, of Gowrie and Donell Doering and her husband, David, of Mason City. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Ryan, Kari, Meagan and Eric Adam and Jenny and Chris Doering. Elsie is also survived by her longtime friend and farming associate, Don Wilson, of Hardy. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Walter and Howard Hunt. Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.
