Beverly Umstead, 83, of Tempe, AZ passed away on March 9, 2009 in Phoenix. Beverly was born in Ft. Dodge, Iowa on August 21, 1925. She attended a one-room school house through eighth grade. She attended Eagle Grove High School and graduated in 1943. She was president of her senior class and a cheerleader. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College for one year and then returned home to teach school. Beverly worked for civil service in Dayton, Ohio during WWII. She met Calvin Umstead, married, and returned to Iowa to farm. In 1960 they moved their family to Tucson, Arizona. They also lived in Globe and Yuma. Beverly attended community college and worked several years as a finance analyst for the Yuma Marine Corp Air Station. She and her husband, Calvin, retired in Tempe. Beverly was active in various groups and organizations. She loved antiquing, movies, lunching with friends and, most of all, her beloved Suns and Diamondbacks. Beverly had been a Suns season ticketholder for 25 years. Beverly is preceded in death by her brother Robert [Howerter] and parents Rella and Lloyd [Howerter]. She is survived by four children Bruce Umstead, Donna Umstead, Barry Umstead and Becky Jo Umstead. Beverly's four grandsons, Marty Joost, David Umstead, Ben Umstead, and Kenny Umstead were her greatest joy. She will be greatly missed by friends and family. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm, Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Dayspring United Methodist Church, 1365 E. Elliot Rd. Tempe, AZ. Arrangements entrusted to Tempe Mortuary.
