Jake Theodore Gruis, 79, of Apopka, Florida, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009. He was born Dec 29, 1929 in Meservey, Iowa and graduated from Belmond High School in 1947. He served in the US Air Force at Eielson AFB Fairbanks, Alaska. A graduate of the University of Florida, receiving a Masters of Science in Horticulture, Jake started working for the O.M. Scotts company in Apopka in 1962. He held a co-patent for the Seville Saint Augustine grass. In 1975 Jake was presented the Apopka Chamber of Commerce Award, "The Man Who Has Done The Most To Beautify The City Of Apopka". Jake Gruis is survived by his children, Alan Daniel Gruis and Janet Elaine Webb; grandchildren, Eric Brandon Webb and Sarah Elizabeth Gruis and his canine companion, Freddy. A Memorial Service will be held for Jake Theodore Gruis, March 14th, 2 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Apopka. Jake T. Gruis, 79, Apopka, FL, died March 5, 2009. A memorial service was held March 14 at the First United Methodist Church in Apopka. Jake Theodore was born December 29, 1929 in Meservey to Klaas and Maika Gruis. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1947. Jake served in the U.S. Air Force at Eielson AFB in Fairbanks, AK. He received a masters of science degree in horticulture from the University of Florida. He began working for the O.M. Scotts company in Apopka in 1962 and held a co-patent for Seville Saint Augustine grass. In 1975 Jake was presented the The Man Who Has Done The Most To Beautify The City Of Apopka from the chamber of commerce. He enjoyed spending time with his dog Freddy.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers Ernest and Harm; and sisters Anna Busick, Margaret Geary, Minnie Davenport, Karry Hatfield and Grace (in infancy). Survivors include his children Alan Gruis and Janet Webb; grandchildren Eric Webb and Sarah Gruis; sister Tena Sandry; niece Sharon Sandry; and nephews Donald, Marvin Sandry and Calvin Sandry.
