CLARION, Iowa - Gilbert L. Samuel, 93, Clarion, formerly of Tarkio, Mo., died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, in Clarion. He has been cremated. Gilbert was born Oct. 7, 1915, to Harry and Pearl Samuel near Cedar Gap, Mo. He married Elsie McMillon in 1938 in Springfield, Mo. They lived in Indio, Calif., and later moved to Tarkio. He operated a construction firm for 25 years in the Tarkio and Mound City area. Elsie died in 1984. In 1987, he married Agnes Churchill; they made their home in Clarion. She survives. Gilbert became one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1941, helping to establish the congregation in Tarkio. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert B. Samuel. Additional survivors: daughters, Roberta Peregrine, St Joseph; Ramona (Jerry) Hertzell, Greensboro, N.C.; Rebecca (Scott) Whitehill of Rock Port, Mo.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 711 N. Sixth, Tarkio.
