SUTHERLAND, Iowa -- Patrick Lawrence Martin, 84, of Sutherland passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Cherokee (Iowa) Villa and Rehab Center following a battle with cancer since July 2004. There are no services planned at present. Arrangements are under the direction of Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Patrick was born May 1, 1923, at Kingsley, Iowa. He graduated from Calumet High School in 1942 and attended one year at a technical school. He served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation machinist mate from June 1942 until December 1945, being discharged as a 2nd class petty officer. He was married to Dorothy L. Warren on Sept. 2, 1951, at Jackson, Minn. He had worked for Firestone Tire Co. and the Sutherland Farmer's Coop, retiring in 1985. He had lived in Sutherland for many years, moving to Belmond, Iowa, from 1960 until 1965 when the couple moved to Urbandale, Iowa. They returned to Sutherland in November 1966. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, mechanics and woodworking. His favorite thing to do was to fix something. He was a member and a past master two times in the Masonic Lodge, a member and past patron of the Order of Eastern Star and a member and past commander of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; four sons, Gene Paul Martin and wife, Patti, of Incline Village, Nev., Patrick Kelly Martin of Sutherland, Jeffrey Lyle Martin and his wife, Cherri, of Bakersfield, Calif., and Russell Lewis Martin and his wife, Caroline, of Menifee, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two sisters and two brothers, Laura Walter and her husband, Bill, of Sun City, Calif., Betty Winter and her husband, Paul, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, Burt Martin and his wife, Carolyn, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Paul "Pinky" Martin of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie Martin Gibbs; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and Merritt Henderson; a sister and brother-in-law, Nell and Norman Meyer; a brother, Daniel Martin; and a sister-in-law, Marcine Martin.
